What is Schema Therapy?

Schema Therapy (ST), pioneered by Jeffrey Young, represents an evidence-based therapeutic approach that seamlessly integrates cognitive and experiential techniques. Central to ST is guiding individuals in understanding the myriad ways they’ve learned to adapt and cope with life’s challenges. It provides a supportive environment where individuals can explore and assess their coping mechanisms collaboratively with the therapist, aiming to transcend negative experiences. At its core, a schema encapsulates our perceptions of ourselves, others, and the world. Often rooted in childhood experiences, these schemas are deeply influenced by emotional upbringing. Consequently, Schema Therapy aids individuals in recognizing and reshaping schemas, thus dismantling obstructive patterns that perpetuate negative cycles.

Schemas and Childhood

Early Maladaptive Schemas (EMS) are ingrained emotional and cognitive patterns that originate in early developmental stages and persist throughout life. It’s important to note that, as per this definition, an individual’s behavior isn’t inherently part of the schema itself; Jeffrey Young posits that maladaptive behaviors arise in response to schemas. Consequently, behaviors are influenced by schemas but are distinct from them.
Schemas take root in childhood or adolescence as reflections of the child’s reality-based perceptions of their environment. Our observation indicates that individuals’ schemas often accurately mirror the atmosphere of their early upbringing.
Toxic childhood experiences serve as the primary source of Early Maladaptive Schemas. The schemas that emerge earliest and exhibit the greatest strength typically stem from the nuclear family unit. The dynamics within a child’s family largely shape their early worldview.

What is the training about?

Christof Loose will conduct training sessions to practice schema therapeutic strategies proven successful in cognitive behavioral therapy for childhood and adolescence. Additionally, emphasis will be placed on instructing advanced techniques for working with parents, termed “Schema Coaching for Parents,” which involves specific processes between parent and child and provides insight into reinforcing maladaptive schemas and modes. The training will also cover principles of group Schema Therapy (ST) for working with children and adolescents.
Furthermore, practical demonstrations utilizing pictures and video material will be provided to illustrate real-life scenarios, and exercises will be included to allow participants to apply the content in their own settings.
