Who is Bret Lyon?
From an early age, Bret had a high level of anger towards his parents and others around him. This impulsivity was born from the neglect of his emotionally absent parents. They always ignored him, they never looked after him properly and they were always arguing. The whole family seemed to be in a constant state of conflict, making Bret’s feelings even worse.
As Bret grew older, he realised that his anger was causing him problems and he wanted to learn how to control it. He started reading and discovered that feeling ashamed is often linked to going through tough periods. Over time, he figured out where his feelings of shame came from and decided he wanted to help others understand and deal with theirs too.
Now, Bret Lyon is a co-creator behind the Centre for Healing Shame and one half of the Lyon/Rubin method. Using his personal experiences, he is successful in helping people heal and move past their own feelings of shame.
Who is Sheila Rubin?
Sheila had been a shy person since her early years. Growing up, she quickly became aware of the challenges within her family and felt a strong desire to make sense of it all. Despite her own struggles, Sheila had a deep-seated determination to understand mental health issues and share her insights through writing.
Her mother’s undiagnosed mental illness made daily life unpredictable and difficult. Simple tasks like getting to school on time became a constant struggle for Sheila. After graduating, she realised that her shyness was holding her back, prompting her to seek therapy. It was during this time that she began searching for ways to cope and thrive in the face of adversity and her desire to make a difference in the lives of others grew.
Today, Sheila is the co-creator of the Centre for Healing Shame, and the other half of the Lyon/Rubin method. She works to provide therapists and helping professionals with the tools and knowledge to effectively address shame in their work. Her journey from a shy individual grappling with family challenges to a champion for mental health and healing is truly inspiring.
Sheila and Bret’s journey to healing
Sheila’s career path led her to work in various hospitals, where she gained valuable insights into different therapies. Through her experiences, she developed a keen understanding of how people combat shame and the various ways they can become aware of it.
Teaming up with Bret, they pooled their knowledge and expertise to create an organisation that breaks down complex concepts surrounding shame into accessible resources. Their goal was to make these resources available not only to clinicians but also to the public seeking to understand and cope with their shame.
Drawing from their own journeys and the experiences of their patients, Sheila and Bret gained a deeper understanding of human emotions. They used these insights to connect with others on a profound level, providing meaning to the struggles many faced with shame.
Shame unmasked: spreading worldwide
This year, Bret and Sheila have published a book sharing their insights which has captivated readers in the US and Canada and brought them great popularity. It’s accessible for anyone to read, not just clinicians, and aims to familiarise people with shame. We are delighted to be welcoming them to Psychotherapy Courses and widening the scope of their work to global audiences. Through their collaborative efforts, they seek to empower individuals to confront and overcome shame, fostering a global community of healing and understanding where individuals from all walks of life can come together to confront and overcome shame.
As they embark on this next chapter of their journey, Sheila and Bret are poised to leave an indelible mark on the world, inspiring healing and transformation wherever they go.
