Course Breakdown:

The landscape of contemporary psychotherapy includes a wide range of different approaches. Interventions for difficult and traumatised patients mainly focus on the process of dissociation/integration of the personality parts originated by traumatic experiences. The traumatised Self is built by means of attachment relationships, early traumatic experiences and consequent dissociative phenomena.

We can look at psychological struggles through the lenses of two interrelated indicators: the level of integration of the Self and the person’s ability to have a relationship with the outer world. Based on this assumption, psychotherapy is more and more seen as an intervention to integrate the dissociated parts into a cohesive Self. The therapeutic relationship thus plays a key role in repairing dissociated states resulting from early or later relational trauma, more or less severe.

Mindful Interbeing Mirror Therapy (MIMT) is a cutting-edge approach in which the patient and the therapist are both in front of a mirror and interact with their reflected image. This unique method is based on integrating the latest neuroscience research with clinical findings supporting its effectiveness and validity.

The construction of the Self and the construction of a relational world are two parallel processes belonging to individual development, the starting point of which is self-recognition in the mirror – a foundation stone of the construction of the identity – and the ability to recognise the other’s emotional states within the relationship. Therefore, the mirror is a unique tool to reconstruct a cohesive Self that is in relationship with the other.

Over the years dedicated to studying, developing and adjusting this approach, MIMT proved to be an innovative and highly accelerated method to create a connection between patient and therapist, which eases the integration between different Selves, allowing the patient to experience a deep form of truly transformative self-compassion.
The webinar is going to provide you with an overview of the foundational theory of the MIMT approach. Furthermore, clinical videos will be presented to illustrate some of the most significant aspects of the intervention.
