What does this Training consist of?

Schema Therapy (ST), developed by Jeffrey Young is an enhancement and development of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) which integrates emotions but also developmental aspects, central to diagnostic and therapeutic considerations. ST is based on a model of schemas, modes and basic needs and “their fate” during the course of life. Therefore, ST – in terms of a technical and strategic variant of CBT and especially in the field of child and adolescent therapy – is particularly suited to generating action-guiding, diagnostic and therapeutic concepts.

This course is broken down into 4 workshops on the ‘Children’s Curriculum’. You will first look at the Schema Therapeutic conceptual model (schemas, modes and coping strategies) followed by the underlying theory (central importance to core needs in the context of developmental tasks) then possible diagnostic means (e.g. projective methods) and finally the requirements in the therapeutic attitude on the basis of temperament and personality factors of the patient (e.g. concept of ‘limited reparenting’ and ’empathic confrontation’).

In the center of the workshop series, there are training and practice units which encompass schema therapeutic strategies that have proven successful in the cognitive behavioral therapy of childhood and adolescence. Another focus is laid on the teaching of advanced and deepened work with parents in terms of “Schema Coaching for Parents” that includes schema or mode specific transactional processes between child and parent and shed a light on the mutual reinforcement processes of child’s und parent’s maladaptive schemas and modes. Finally, the fundamental principles of group ST in working with children and adolescents will be analysed.

Beside the features of Schema Theory, the workshops offer many practical demonstrations through picture and video material or life demonstrations, and small exercises allow the participants to transfer the content into their own practice.

ISC is an ISST-approved Institute, including approval to provide accredited ISST-training for ST-CA , led by Dr. Christof Loose.

The first lesson will focus on the origin and repetition over time of maladaptive patterns, contextualising them with respect to the specific developmental phases of each age and with respect to the combination of risk and protective factors linked to temperament. Closely related to the child’s age, the early maladaptive patterns described by Young are made explicit through the child’s appearance and the coping strategies they adopt. Topics will also be covered such as multimodal diagnostic techniques (exploration, surveys, use of imagination, conceptualisation of the case) and the importance of the therapeutic relationship, psychoeducation and empathic confrontation.

First Workshop
In order to show the different therapeutic strategies, a complete overview will be offered: from the use of drawings and photographs, to fashion-based play therapy; from the use of stories, finger and hand puppets and metaphors, to exercises with chairs; from imagination exercises to the use of templates, through the use of flash cards and homework. Finally, a significant part of the ST-BA concerns work with parents, the most important aspects of which will be analysed.

The contents that will be covered will include the typical constellations of parental fashions, flash cards on fashions, the analysis of parental patterns and fashions and the practical application of working on fashions with parents (using chairs, templates, wooden figures, drawings, etc.).

Exemplary videos, live demonstrations and role plays carried out by groups of two or three participants will allow three different exercises to be consolidated and explored in depth.

20 June 2024 from 13:00 to 18:10

Second Workshop

The Second workshop is based on the contents presented to the participants during the introductory workshop. You will need to have attended or watched the content of the previous days for this one to be of value.

The objective of this lesson is to learn ST techniques specifically aimed at children. After some brief mention of the introductory Theory of Schemas and the sharing of some practical experiences, the lesson will focus mainly on the peculiarities of the particular therapeutic relationship, which include, for example, the concepts of limited reparenting and empathic confrontation, as well as on practical work with the technical specifications of the ST. Videos, live demonstrations and/or role plays carried out by groups of two or three participants will allow you to consolidate and deepen what you have learned.

The contents and methods analysed will concern:

The use (of incipits) of stories (with practical exercises);
The use of finger and hand puppets;
The use of mode cards (mode walk exercise: hear, speak, & walk);
The use of chair dialogues (dialogue with two chairs; focus on critical/punitive mode);
Creating a rap song about patterns or modes;
Imaginative exercises (imaginary visit to the intelligent and wise mode).

Third Workshop

The Third lesson is based on the contents presented to you during the first two lessons. You should have attended the other workshops before attending this one.

The methodology adopted by ST for parents, or Schema Coaching, is based on psychoeducation, chair exercises, the use of fashion flash cards, internal dialogue and imagination. Example videos and images, live demonstrations and/or role plays carried out by groups of two or three participants will allow you to consolidate and deepen what you have learned.

13 September 2024 from 13:00 to 18:10

The Eight day is a continuation of the Third workshop.

17 October 2024 from 13:00 to 18:10

Fourth Workshop

The Fourth lesson is based on the contents presented during the previous workshops. In order to participate in this lesson, it is advisable, but not mandatory, to have attended the previous ones.

This lesson aims to apply the different approaches adopted by ST to your own cases. After the presentation of a case to the whole group, the participants – this time divided into small groups – will conceptualise the case and develop a treatment plan for that specific patient and their family, using the ST methodology. Starting from ST therapeutic treatments already implemented, both the progress and the problems relating to the techniques used will be discussed. Finally, during the last learning unit, you will learn to use the ‘Inner House’ method, as well as to adopt the ST approach in the context of play therapy (suitable for school and preschool children). Example videos and images, live demonstrations and/or role plays carried out by groups of two or three participants will allow you to consolidate and deepen what you have learned.
