Learning outcomes
  • Apply age-appropriate play therapeutic approaches for children.
  • Apply metaphors and chair dialogues for adolescents and young adults.
  • Understand that when a patient’s needs get frustrated, this can lead to ‘negative emotions’ such as sadness, anger or fear, if the frustration is allowed to continue the ‘negative emotions’ become ‘painful emotions’. Use this knowledge to explain and investigate your patient’s core needs.
  • Understand that, to avoid painful emotions, humans build up protector modes such as the detached, dissociative, regressive, angry, self-soothing/stimulating, hyperactive, somaticizing, avoiding, or complaining Protector modes.
  • Understand why protector modes are activated (e.g. to reduce pain) while also understanding that these protector modes prevent you from understanding and meeting your patients needs therefore halting the progress of therapy and allowing the continuation of your patient’s suffering.
  • Know the importance of offering your patients proper psychoeducation about the significance of emotions in general, and particularly of the Vulnerable Child mode (VCM).
  • Help patients to identify and integrate the VCM into their inner state (i.e. case conceptualization).
  • Identify the activities in which the VCM can be well integrated, as well as practical training procedures to build a bridge to everyday life.

Event Breakdown

Schema Therapy has become a hot topic within Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) and the world of psychotherapy in general. The approach has quickly gained popularity among clinicians and mental health services for its high success rates with difficult-to-treat patients, e,g, children, adolescents and parents who have more severe, chronic, entrenched difficulties and do not respond to first line approaches. This includes the significant proportion of patients who do not engage in or respond to CBT (or showed an initial response and then relapse).

A current problem in therapy is that patients are not able or willing to disclose their deeper emotions and underlying core needs, thus preventing the therapist/counsellor from getting an in-depth understanding of the problem.

The webinar will involve both training and practice units, encompassing schema therapeutic strategies that have proven successful in schema-and mode-driven CBT. You will be lead by Chris Loose, a pioneer of the schema protocol for children. You will be presented with the case vignette of the 18-y-old female patient named “Julia”, most of the exercises will be lively and vividly demonstrated with the assistance of Andrea Loose.

19 April 2024 from 08:00 to 16:00

After a brief Introduction to Schema Therapy, the first day of the webinar will focus on Detached Protector modes and their different versions. Though there are positive aspects of Protector modes, you will explore their problematic and dysfunctional sides in day-to-day life and in a therapeutic context. Goal no. 1 is allowing you to learn how to support the development of adequate and functional Protector modes that better fit into your patient’s worlds.

20 April 2024 from 08:00 to 16:00

As soon as patients are willing to disclose their inner world in an open and trustful way, therapists are frequently challenged by the activation of the patient’s Vulnerable Child mode (VCM), especially when the Protector mode is not protecting them in that moment. Therefore, the second day of the webinar will focus on working with the Vulnerable Child mode. More specifically, goal no. 2 is to provide you with a number of guidelines explaining how to protect, nurture, and soothe your patient’s VCM (Validation & Protection).  As well as how to strengthen it and commit it to being open for positive and healing experiences, and how to develop a realistic plan for performance in day-to-day life.
