Course Breakdown:

Part 1: Defining a healthy mind through the framework of Interpersonal Neurobiology

“What is the meaning I can make of experience?” Existential questions are a familiar occurrence as humans attempt to make sense in a world that “makes no sense”. From the field of developmental psychology, and through a lens of neurobiology, sociology, anthropology, biochemistry and physics Dr. Daniel Siegel will guide you through the ‘flow of energy’ and the concept of mind as energy flow. You will learn the regulatory processes of the mind and how this impacts clients’ sense of self and connection in the world, applying a trauma-informed approach. Dr. Siegal will then introduce topics of integration and neuroplasticity, and their applicative techniques in therapy through his ‘Wheel of Awareness’ approach. Part one ends with a guided practice using the wheel.

Part 2: Reflecting on the ‘Wheel of Awareness’ practice and the therapeutic ways in which to use it

Building on the shared individual experiences of the meditation, Dr. Siegel will teach you the ways in which trauma impacts the practice and how to work through this with clients. You will then learn how to use its variations according to client needs and how to create a trusting environment. Then you will delve into the concepts of awareness and meta-awareness, learning how to teach clients to strengthen the mind.

Part 3: Mind training and integrating states

Discover what the ‘linkage of different parts of a system’ is and heal client mental health by guiding them to monitor emotions with more stability. Using his 3P model, Dr. Siegel will demonstrate how you can counsel your client to modify their thinking toward integration with their actions. This part focuses on Dr. Siegel’s consilient approach, culminating all that you have learnt so far.

Part 4: Becoming the mindful therapist

Dr. Siegel will guide your professional development placing emphasis on the recognition of “the PART we play as therapists.” Using what you have learnt regarding neuroplasticity, you will develop strategies to monitor and modify energy and information flow with more clarity and power. You will ultimately understand how the concept of integration can serve as an organising principle that illuminates mindsight, harmony, resilience, and vitality.
