Integration of EMDR and Internal Family Systems Therapy: An approach towards healing traumatized patients

led by Bruce Hersey

You will be presented with an in-depth overview of the overlap of IFS and EMDR. There’ll be focus on the underlying natural organic healing process and the nature of Dual Attention. You will also learn how IFS and the Coherence therapy’s clinical model of memory reconsolidation align. Together they are able to bridge a gap in the EMDR standard protocol when protectors (defenses) are encountered. They provide a larger systemic ego state context for guidance throughout the standard protocol.

Course Breakdown:

Using internal family systems (IFS) concepts as organizing principles in eye movement desensitization and processing (EMDR) Phases One and Two, allows for the organic development of a treatment plan. This plan can be used to identify the most appropriate current target and it provides the therapist and client a clearer path to the essential Assessment Phase. There is emphasis on the importance of gathering each component from a specified internal source.

We can redefine the adaptive information processing (AIP) network and the target network as conscious relational entities that are engaged in a dynamic healing relationship. We call this Functional Dual Attention.

A Discovery process, named after a similar phase in Coherence Therapy, is outlined as a useful intermediate form of EMDR processing. It combines resourcing and indirect trauma processing within the Preparation Phase which leads into the conventional Assessment Phase. This method of working with protectors (defenses) using bilateral stimulation. It is applied when the lack of functional Dual Attention precludes a complete Assessment Phase, otherwise known as desensitization.

The role of the hippocampus is a possible target of EMDR. It accesses, enhances, and supports Functional Dual Attention. You will discover its relevance to both EMDR and IFS.
