Course Breakdown:

Part 1:

Ego state therapy is a way of differentiation and connecting neural networks in choiceful and helpful ways. Help your clients to break bad patterns and use your creativity to find techniques that work for the individual. You will be invited to connect with your own inner child to feel for yourself and experience what you will be guiding your client to do. You will be introduced to dissociative states as ego states. You will learn techniques such as the vagal hold for insomnia and how to use social engagement to connect with your clients and create a vagal shift. Shapiro will demonstrate techniques with audience members throughout the workshop.

You will also take a look at anxiety disorders and the steps you can take with your clients to help them be able to reexamine their anxious beliefs as thoughts and not reality. You will learn about how dissociative states happen when someone becomes overwhelmed and the role of opiates in causing this response. You will also see how people with chronic pain and illness are more likely to be anxious and therefore dissociative due to having more opiates in the brain.

 Part 2:

You will have many opportunities to practice techniques to take back to your clients. Develop the ability to recognise when trauma has an attachment element to it and what techniques to use such as an ego-state technique. Listen to demonstrations with volunteers and hear clinical examples from Shapiros own practice to contextualise your learning. See the differentiation between simple and complex traumas and the different treatment strategies you could use for both cases.

You will explore the relationship between your client and their partner in cases where someone has faced sexual trauma. Understand the importance of your client feeling safe and in control by guiding them on how to approach their partner in-terms of communicating their needs. Learn how to use techniques such as the two-hand technique to differentiate between the abusive party and current partner. Learn how to guide your clients in how to nurture their inner child and create stronger self-attachments. Additionally you will be taught ways to create a safe space for your client and how to help them to navigate state changes between themselves and their partner.

Part 3:

Help your clients to find a good life partner and break the cycle of choosing abusive partners by learning ways to restrain their inner child. You will be shown how you can treat clients with autoimmune diseases using EMDR and emotional freedom technique and what to do in cases of overreaction. Learn about the pain protocol and ego state targets within this context and see a clinical example.

Help your clients to overcome the guilt and shame associated with abuse by reconnected them with their inner child and telling this inner child that they did not deserve the treatment they received and are deserving of love. Shapiro will take you through an in-depth look at different personality disorders as examples of secondary dissociation. After this workshop you will have a better understanding of how to approach treatment for these clients by looking at the child and adult parts of the self. You will develop your understanding of how narcissism develops as a result of deep shame experienced by the child self and how to overcome the different types of narcissistic defences displayed by your clients.
