Clinical applications of attachment theory for working with adults, children and adolescents

led by Una McCluskey

The webinar will illustrate how to work productively with the dynamics of attachment. It will help you to understand the concept of “correction according to purpose” (goal-correction) and how it relates to the biopsychosocial aspects of the self, both individual and interpersonal. A central focus of this webinar will be on the process of affective attunement and the therapist’s ability to grasp the emotional state of the client through his or her own bodily experience. This aspect takes on particular importance in working with trauma survivors, as it allows for avoiding the risk of re-traumatization of the patient.

Learning outcomes
  • Understand what it means to be “seen” as a person.
  • Analyse the paradox of the Self as an autonomous entity as well as a relational one.
  • Discover the seven aspects of the Self that together form the dynamics of attachment and work as a whole entity to restore well-being.
  • Understand the importance of Goal-Corrected Empathic Attunement (GCEA) and its role in the regulation of various aspects of the Self.
  • Understand how goal-correction in caregiver-careseeker interactions helps behavior change and self-awareness biologically.
  • Access a summary of the research on how caregivers and careseekers typically interact.
  • Analyse the patterns related to interactions that emerge from such research and the implications for clinical practice.
  • Introduce the concept of an essential system and its defensive function, both within the careseeker and the caregiver.
Training Breakdown

The webinar will have the following structure:

  • Introduction to the fundamental contributions to attachment theory and research in this area.
  • Introduction to the main findings made by developmental psychology, especially in the area of affective attunement and regulation.
  • Introduction to research on affective attunement in the context of psychotherapy with adults and reflection on its importance with respect to the development of a model of intervention for use in clinical practice (U. McCluskey 1997, 2001 & 2005).
  • Introduction to the different ways in which activation of the fear system occurs in the body and can be detected by the therapist through observation of micro-movements, as well as regulated in such a way as to avoid re-enactment by the patient.
  • Introduction to the approach taken by the therapist to work with the different aspects of the corrected self according to the purpose.

The therapeutic approach extensively described during the webinar, focuses on the regulation of fear. This allow for a process of exploration and makes the person seeking help central to the process of discovery.

All of this supports the establishment, within the therapeutic encounter, of a dynamic based on supportive, friendly and exploratory caregiving, which minimises the dynamic based on the opposition between domination and submission. Finally, the webinar will include viewing videos that will illustrate the approach a caregiver can take to work with the correct systems according to the purpose.

Una McCluskey
Una McCluskey

Una McCluskey, PhD, served as a senior researcher at the University of York and was a clinical member of the UKCP professional association. She currently works with health and care professionals and provides them with training in the clinical applications of attachment theory. Known primarily for her research related to affective attunement in the context of psychotherapy with adults, Dr. McCluskey has discovered that “caregiving” can activate attachment dynamics in both the person seeking care (careseeker) and the person caring for them (caregiver). This discovery has enabled significant developments in the work of therapists using an attachment-based approach. In line with John Bowlby’s original work on Goal-Corrected Behavioral Systems and later the work of Dorothy Heard and Brian Lake, Dr. McCluskey developed a therapeutic model called “Exploratory Goal-Corrected Psychotherapy” or EGCP. Renowned both in the UK and internationally for her important contributions to theory and clinical practice related to attachment dynamics in adulthood, she devised a specific model of clinical application of attachment theory, the McCluskey Model, for use in individual, couple, family, group or corporate therapy.
